Macquarie University's MCCALL Screen Production Faculty ran a masterclass with Sennheiser on how to work as a solo operator, led by award-winning Australian cinematographer Andy Taylor ACS. Journalist Ray Martin joined him for the day. The university needed the day captured for students who couldn't attend and for the record.
We covered the sessions as they ran: the lighting demonstrations, the camera and audio setups, the room watching, and the conversation between Andy Taylor and Ray Martin. Around it, interviews with Dr Iqbal Barkat from the faculty, student Sarah Chambers, and Sennheiser's team.
Filming a masterclass about filming means everyone in the room knows exactly what you're doing. We stayed further back than usual and let the sessions run. The value for the faculty is that students who couldn't attend still get the day, and it stays useful long after the event, which is rarely true of event coverage.
