A profile film for Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen, recognised for Excellence in Biological Sciences at the 2024 NSW Premier's Prizes for Science and Engineering. Played to a room at Government House and used afterwards.
We filmed him where the work happens, in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology at Macquarie University. The interview runs over the lab itself: plates and samples, the biosafety cabinets, his researchers at the bench.
Explaining synthetic biology to a room at Government House in under two minutes is the actual brief, and most of that work happens in the edit. Government jobs also carry a real approval chain, so the file that arrives has to be right the first time rather than fixed later. We filmed him in his own lab so the science had somewhere to sit while he talked.
