A profile film for Professor Susan Coppersmith, Head of the School of Physics at UNSW Sydney, recognised for Excellence in Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry or Physics at the 2024 NSW Premier's Prizes. Played at Government House and used afterwards.
We filmed her where the work is, in the quantum computing labs at UNSW, around the dilution refrigerators and the researchers who run them. The interview covers condensed matter physics and quantum computing in plain terms, and the film cuts between that and the lab itself. Government work has a real approval chain, so the file that arrives has to be right the first time.
Quantum computing isn't an easy thing to explain in two minutes, and she does it without dumbing it down. Our job was to stay out of the way of that and give the lab enough screen time to carry the parts words can't. Like the other films in this series, it had to clear a government approval chain, so it needed to be right on delivery rather than fixed afterwards.
