A short documentary about Guy Warren, the Australian artist, made for broadcast on The Sunday Project. He was still drawing and painting at 100, in the same studio he had worked in for decades. The story was never going to be his age. It was that he had not stopped.
We filmed him at work in his own studio and stayed out of it. The film moves between the drawing on the desk, his exhibition at the National Centre for Drawing, archive photographs from his war years, and an evening where he appeared on stage with musicians. The craft here is patience and knowing when not to ask the next question.
Films like this fail when the crew fills the silence. We let him work and asked less than we wanted to. His own drawings, the gallery show and the war-era photographs do the rest of the talking, so the piece never has to tell you he is remarkable.
