The brief

A film for the Aboriginal Housing Office, part of the NSW Government, about housing delivered to Aboriginal communities across regional New South Wales. It had to be told by the people living it rather than narrated over the top of them.

What we did

We filmed on Country and let the conversations run, with Famey Williams, the AHO Chief Executive, and William Charles Murray, a resident at Wilcannia. Around the interviews: aerials over the communities, homes finished and homes still in frame, and Aboriginal trainees on the tools building them. Work like this depends on trust and on not rushing, which is a crew decision more than a camera one.

The result

A film that shows the houses and the jobs in the same breath, in the words of the people they belong to.
